Marina Fernandes holds a Master's degree in Social Sciences from the Federal University of Bahia, with a background in rural sociology and political sociology focusing on the interface between social movements and the state. She works mainly on issues such as activism and contemporary democracy, political participation and the relationship between the state and collective action.

She is currently doing her PhD in Sociology at the University of Montreal and in Political Science at the University of Brasília, under a cotutelle arrangement. Her research focuses on understanding the reconfigurations of the activist network formed by the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) and the Levante Popular da Juventude after the reconfiguration of state-society relations opened by the 2016 coup in Brazil.
